“Hey Alexa, What is Voice Search?”

Hey Alexa,

As the highest-selling Amazon product on Black Friday, Echo and other voice-search devices have quickly become a staple in many households across America. Today, 11% of households connected to Wi-Fi use a voice-search device such as Echo, Google Home, and Apple HomePod. According to a recent comScore report, that number will rise to 19% in less than a year, and by 2020, it is estimated that 50% of internet searches will be done using voice commands. We already know and frequently use Siri and Cortana on our phones, but these home devices make using voice-search technology even more accessible to the public.

Most users rely on voice-search devices when their hands or vision are occupied. For example, let’s imagine you’re doing a bit of cleaning around the house. You’re in a stride and feeling super productive, and then suddenly, your cleaning music playlist ends. Before Echo and Google Home, you would have to put down your broom, go get your phone from the other room, unlock it, pull up your music app, scroll through until you found the perfect song, make sure it’s connected to Bluetooth—so time consuming! Now with voice search devices, you can simply say “Alexa, play Whitney Houston “How Will I Know”, and get back to sweeping! (Or dancing, whichever you prefer.)

So, how do they know what answer to give when asked a question? When you Google search something on your computer, tablet, or phone, the most popular answer springs to the top of the page in bold font with a box around it. These are called “feature snippets.” Google detects certain pages that answer the users question and displays a top answer as a featured snippet in the search results. If you want your website to be in featured snippets, try rephrasing the way you give information on your pages. Instead of using bullet points, try wording the information as if you’re having a natural conversation with someone. Make sure you are also available to be found through directory services, such as Angie’s List or HomeAdvisor, as this will also increase your websites chances of being in a featured snippet.
